Parliament backs deal on revised RoHS directive

MEPs have backed a first-reading deal on hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). Existing bans on certain substances will be extended to all types of EEE except those specifically excluded from the RoHS directive.

RoHS's extended scope will apply in eight years, not right away. Exemptions include fixed industrial machinery, military material and photovoltaic solar panels. Environment ministers meeting in Brussels in December are likely to back the deal.
