Energy efficiency should be at the core of the European Commission's energy strategy for 2011-20, MEPs said in Strasbourg on Thursday in response to the plan issued in November. Half of EU homes should have smart meters by 2015, they added.
Thursday's resolution is an attempt to give new impetus to energy efficiency efforts, which have lost momentum in recent years. A report has shown policies adopted since 2006 are not delivering the savings needed to meet the EU's 20% goal by 2020.
