Europe to ban BPA in baby bottles from 2011

Europe will ban baby bottles containing controversial chemical bisphenol A (BPA) from next year after the EU's standing committee on food chain and animal health, a body of national government representatives, backed the move on Thursday afternoon.

The European Commission's proposed ban, initially intended to be tabled in 2011, was approved by a qualified majority. Member States must prohibit the manufacture of bottles containing BPA by March and their import and sale by June.
