Japan leaks reignite Europe’s nuclear power debate

Japan’s unfolding nuclear safety crisis is sending political shockwaves across Europe and beyond. The spectre of a major radioactive release is reawakening fears last fully expressed when the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine exploded in 1986.

This morning the European commission announced that it will host a meeting of European nuclear safety authorities and nuclear power station operators on Tuesday. The EU council’s working party on atomic questions will also meet.
