Commission unveils new EU transport policy

Cars used in cities should be oil-free and 50% of road freight travelling over 300 kilometres should shift to rail or waterborne transport by 2050, according to a major EU policy paper on transport published by the European Commission on Monday.

The two goals are among ten envisaged as part of a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport by 60%. Other goals include ensuring 40% low-carbon fuels in aviation by 2050 and building a European high-speed train network.
