Steel sector 'can reduce CO2 by optimising use'

Optimising steel use by improving design, producing less waste and extending product life could help reduce steelmakers' carbon footprint, industry representatives heard at a conference on green steel strategies in Brussels on Tuesday.

This will imply close cooperation between producers and downstream users such as carmakers and construction firms, delegates heard. Julian Allwood from Cambridge University said the Wellmet 2050 project was exploring ways of cutting emissions from steel and aluminium through a more integrated supply chain.
