Portugal doubles car recycling rates in a year

New tax and tougher enforcement behind improvement in treatment rates, says recycler association

Portugal has doubled its car recycling rates over the past twelve months, according to new figures from vehicle recycling industry organisation Valorcar. Twice as many end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) had passed through Portugal’s 34 authorised treatment facilities by September this year compared with the first nine months of 2006, it said.

Valorcar members received 28,392 ELVs up to 1 October compared with 14,241 in the same period in 2006. This lower figure had itself been an improvement on previous year.
