EU executive unveils energy roadmap to 2050

Ambitious scenarios involving more energy efficiency and renewables will cost about the same as if Europe continues to rely heavily on fossil fuels and nuclear, Günther Oettinger said on Thursday as he unveiled the EU's energy roadmap to 2050.

The roadmap, which explores five decarbonising scenarios, closely resembles a draft version leaked to the press earlier this month. Meeting the EU's climate goal for 2050 means CO2 emissions from the power sector will have to drop by more than 90%.
