Compliance with EU rules on sewage treatment is still patchy, even in older member states, according to the European Commission's latest report on implementation of the 1991 urban wastewater treatment directive, published on Monday.
The EU-15 had to be fully compliant by 2005, but in 2007 and 2008 – the period the report is based on – compliance with some aspects of the directive was still below 50% in Belgium, Ireland, Luxemburg, Spain and Portugal. Only Austria, Denmark and Germany have met all implementation deadlines, the report notes.
