The European Commission should consider barring international offset credits from some large-scale hydropower projects from the EU emissions trading scheme (ETS), according to a review of the clean development mechanism (CDM) published last week.
But the study, led by consultancy AEA, says the commission must conduct a more thorough assessment of the effect such a ban would have on the ETS and more environmentally and socially beneficial hydropower projects before taking action.
