Pollution at Anglo-Welsh industrial sites rises

Waste and water sector pollution in England and Wales increased sharply last year, against the backdrop of a ten-year low in serious pollution incidents

Pollution from the waste and water sectors in England and Wales increased significantly last year, against the backdrop of a ten-year low in serious pollution incidents.

This mixed picture emerged from a report released by the Anglo-Welsh environment agency. It reveals waste and odour pollution from the growing biowaste sector is an emerging problem for the environmental regulator.

Encouragingly, the report shows that total serious pollution incidents across all business sectors fell by 4% to 620 last year, the lowest level in a decade. Just under two thirds of incidents (380) were from sites in sectors not regulated by the agency or were due to unidentified pollution sources.
