Sovereign bond investors and credit rating agencies must take into account environmental factors into their risk analysis, says the UN's environment programme (UNEP). Its E-RISC report due on 19 November will suggest a methodology.

Environmental risks such as resource scarcity are "potentially large enough to affect countries' economies in ways that could influence their willingness or ability to repay sovereign debt", according to UNEP's Finance Initiative.
