NZ says no to Kyoto 2, Australia ready to join

New Zealand has announced it will not sign up to a second Kyoto commitment period at the UN climate meeting in Doha. But Australia says it is ready to join

New Zealand's climate change minister Tim Groser has announced his country will not sign up to a second commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol at the forthcoming international climate meeting in Doha.

The news emerged on Friday as his Australian counterpart, Greg Combet, confirmed he was ready to join a second commitment period if certain conditions were met.

"We have decided it is in New Zealand's best interest to… take our next [greenhouse gas emission reduction] commitment under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change rather than the Kyoto Protocol", said Mr Groser.
