Danish farmers continue to use more pesticides and herbicides and the toxicity of the substances sprayed on crops is also increasing, according to the latest statistics released by Denmark's environment ministry on Thursday.
The statistics show a spraying frequency index of 3.18 in 2011 compared with 2.80 the previous year, a 13% increase. The pesticide load index, which indicates product toxicity, was slightly down last year but this masks a 35% increase since 2007.
