MEPs are locked in negotiations on whether to open the EU’s new €80bn research and innovation budget to cleaner fossil fuels, ahead of a crucial vote next week on the terms and conditions of access to the cash.
Over the coming days, more than 1,800 amendments from the parliament’s industry, research and energy committee must be consolidated into a few firm options, on which the committee will vote on 28 November.
According to one rapporteur, British MEP Peter Skinner of the S&D socialist group, “the parliament’s efforts will mean a greener tinge to Horizon 2020”, the first draft for which was proposed by the commission this time last year. “For example, we have worked to boost funding for nuclear decommissioning,” he said.
