The European Commission has set legal criteria by which palm oil can be defined as “sustainable” and counted towards member states' biofuels targets for the transport sector.

The new rules under which palm oil crops can be used to comply with the EU’s renewable energy directive were proposed by the “Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil” (RSPO) and approved by the Commission late last week.
