The European court of justice has fined Ireland €3.5m topped up with daily penalties for long-running failures in implementing EU environmental laws.
Ireland must pay €2m up front for failing to comply with a 2009 ruling that the country had failed to fulfil its obligations on wastewater disposed of in septic tanks. Ireland must also pay €12,000 every day until it complies with the judgment.
