Commission proposes rules on access to environmental justice to complete Ã…rhus convention implementation

The European Commission has tabled proposals to complete the EU's implementation of the UN's 1998 Århus convention on access to information, public participation in decision-making and access to justice in environmental matters.

According to the Commission, they represent "a milestone in strengthening democracy in environmental policy-making" and will empower citizens and associations to "assume responsibility for the environment" after entry into force planned for 2005.
