Carbon black was by far the largest category of nanomaterials that was either produced or imported into France last year, according to a detailed analysis of substances declared under the member state's first reporting deadline.

Some 3,409 declarations were submitted by 30 June, representing about 500,000 tonnes of nanomaterials placed on the market in 2012. About 56% of this total amount (280,000 tonnes) was produced in the country. The rest was imported.
