The way producer responsibility organisations (PROs) are run should be regulated under European law, according to the EU’s public waste management sector.

In a position paper issued on 2 December, Municipal Waste Europe said it wants transparency on PROs’ income and expenditure.

PROs, which manage extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes on behalf of producers, rarely cover the cost of using the municipal infrastructure for the collection and treatment of the waste they are in charge of, it points out.
