Only ship recycling facilities on an approved list will be able to scrap vessels flying EU flags by 2019, under new rules published on Tuesday. The restriction could apply sooner if enough suitable facilities are identified.
The regulation, agreed by EU lawmakers in the summer, is meant to stop owners sending ships to be dismantled on developing countries’ beaches and will implement the international Hong Kong convention on ship recycling.
