S&D MEPs say they are confident the incoming Commission will include high-level oversight for sustainable development, allowing them to back controversial climate and energy commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete.
Commission vice-president for better regulation and inter-institutional relations Frans Timmermans will take on responsibility for sustainable development, the S&D said. Mr Timmermans is a member of the S&D.
The group’s support for Mr Cañete, a member of the EPP, ensured the Spanish commissioner could win the vote on his position on Wednesday night. The S&D’s decision was heavily criticised by GUE-NGL and Green MEPs, and by its own members in Spain.
