Fracking impact should not be underestimated – US official

European governments should not underestimate the impact of shale gas extraction on communities and infrastructure, a senior US official said this week

European governments should not underestimate the impact of shale gas extraction on communities and infrastructure, a senior US official said this week.

In the early days of the US shale gas boom, “industry underestimated the community impact”, Melanie Kenderdine, head of the US Department of Energy’s policy office, told a conference at Chatham House in London.

“You’re seeing it in North Dakota with shale oil, enormous impacts on the communities – roads, water systems, schools. So my advice would be to not underestimate the impacts on communities and make sure that communities are compensated,” Ms Kenderdine said, adding that population density in shale gas areas in Poland is a significant problem.
