Slovakia’s Maroš Šefcovic was named European Commission vice-president for energy union on Wednesday evening, in a reshuffle following the departure of Alenka Bratušek of Slovenia.

Mr Šefcovic is currently commissioner for inter-institutional relations and is affiliated with the S&D group.

He had been in line for the transport post in the new Commission, but this will instead go to Violeta Bulc, Slovenia’s replacement for Ms Bratušek, who was rejected by MEPs. Ms Bulc is a newly elected member of the Slovenian parliament and became a minister a few weeks ago.
