The EU’s chemicals register will allow the categorisation of substances used in fracking from 2016, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and European Commission said.

Under the REACH chemicals regulation, substances should be registered for a particular use but at present there is no use category for fracking. The planned update will “provide more transparency on which chemicals are used for fracking and under which conditions”, ECHA told ENDS.
