EU CO2 cuts on track, experts report

The EU had almost reached its 2020 greenhouse gas reduction target already in 2013, according to the latest figures from the European Environmental Agency (EEA).

Greenhouse gas emissions dropped by 1.8% between 2012 and 2013, according to preliminary EEA estimates published on Tuesday. The means emissions had fallen 19% below 1990 levels, just short of the 20% goal for 2020.

The EEA expects the EU to achieve 21-24% reductions by 2020 depending on whether member states stick with policies and measures already adopted or implement additional ones currently planned. This estimate is unchanged year on year.
