Airlines including Saudi Arabia’s national carrier have been fined in Belgium for failing to comply with the EU emissions trading system (ETS), ENDS has learned.
Fines were issued for failure to comply with requirements for 2012, a spokeswoman for the Flemish environment ministry said.
The government intends to disclose which airlines have been fined in line with the “name and shame” provisions in the ETS Directive, but will not do so until the 2012 compliance procedure has been finalised, she added. The number of airlines fined and the amount of money are also confidential for now.
