Lorry deal reached but further talks loom

The controversial issue of lorry cab design changes will remain open for several more years, after lawmakers decided that the details of the new design should be agreed through co-decision

The controversial issue of lorry cab design changes to reduce fuel consumption will remain open for several more years, after MEPs and member states decided that the details of the new design should be agreed through co-decision.

That means the lawmakers will negotiate the detail of the changes themselves, rather than delegating the work to the European Commission.

Lawmakers agreed on Wednesday that the new lorry cab design rules, which are also intended to improve safety, should not come into force before 2022 to give manufacturers time to adapt. The Commission will table a proposal on the design changes in 2016.
