A draft European Commission strategy on cutting administrative costs and simplifying regulation could conflict with environmental policy aims, experts say.

A leaked draft policy paper on ‘Better Regulations for Better Results’ indicates that the Commission wants to introduce checks on member states’ and MEPs’ powers to substantially depart from its policy proposals.

The draft calls for “an impact assessment on any substantial amendments the [European] Parliament or Council propose during the legislative process”.
