Juncker links immigration with climate change

European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker has called for ambitious climate action to “tackle the root causes of the next migration wave”

European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker has called for ambitious climate action to “tackle the root causes of the next migration wave”.

In his inaugural ‘state of the European Union’ speech in the European Parliament on Wednesday, Mr Juncker said there would soon be climate refugees.

The EU should “not sign just any deal” on climate change in Paris in December, Mr Juncker said.

“The EU’s priority has to be to adopt and ambitious, robust and binding deal – we have to fight for that and raise a voice against those in our member states who are not sharing that view,” he said.
