The European Commission has weakened 2030 recycling targets for municipal and packaging waste as part of its new circular economy package, adopted on Wednesday.

The re-use and recycling target for municipal waste put forward by the Commission is set at a minimum of 65% by weight by the end of 2030, down from 70% in a previous proposal. Member states will need to meet an interim goal of 60% by 2025 under the new proposals.
