The European Commission has retained proposals on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme criteria tabled by its predecessor, including an obligation for producers to cover the full cost of their products’ waste management.

The Commission tabled proposals on Wednesday for an update to the Waste Framework Directive as part of the new circular economy package.

The requirement to cover full waste management costs under EPR schemes would include waste collection, treatment and recycling. These provisions in the original proposal were criticised by countries, including Germany, last year.
