Pollution rules for the surface treatment of wood with organic solvents will be extended to cover processing chemicals not strictly defined as preservatives, such as oils and emulsions used for waterproofing.

The ‘preservation of wood and wood products with chemicals’ (WPC) is a new activity under the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED), the law under which the best available techniques reference document (BREF) will be established. Firms’ pollution permits are set based on BREFs.
