The first ever global scheme to reduce aviation emissions has been adopted at an assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organisation in Montreal

The first ever global scheme to reduce aviation emissions has been adopted at an assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in Montreal.

The adoption of a global market-based mechanism (GMBM), which will require airlines to offset greenhouse gas emissions via reductions in other sectors, was received with a standing ovation by negotiators.

The approved resolution confirms the timetable outlined in the draft text published in early September.
