Proposals to introduce ship recycling licences in the EU should be rolled out globally to improve existing “weak” international rules, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has said.

The proposals for licences, currently being considered by the European Commission, were first outlined in an EU study earlier this year. Under this model ships would not be able to dock at EU ports without this licence. The policy could be formally proposed by the Commission before the end of the year.
