The European Commission has opened an investigation into whether reductions to Germany's combined heat and power levy granted to energy-intensive users are compatible with EU law

The European Commission has opened an investigation into whether reductions to Germany's combined heat and power (CHP) levy granted to energy-intensive users are compatible with EU law.

On Monday it approved the German scheme to support cogenerated electricity production with a levy on power consumption to be collected by network operators. But it said that plans to reduce the levy for users with high yearly energy consumption and some energy-intensive industrial users constitute state aid under EU law.
