Ocean energy can fulfil 10% of EU needs by 2050 – report

Wave and tidal energy can generate 350 terawatt hours of electricity, a third of it in Europe, which could meet up to 10% of the EU’s power demand by 2050, a report has said

Wave and tidal energy can generate 350 terawatt hours of electricity, a third of it in Europe, which could meet up to 10% of the EU’s power demand by 2050, a report has said.

The ocean's potential to generate this amount of energy was the key finding in a ‘roadmap’ released by the Ocean Energy Forum – a stakeholder group created by the European Commission in 2014.

“This power is equivalent to cutting 276 million tonnes of CO2 every year,” commissioner Karmenu Vella told the Brussels Ocean Energy Conference.
