EEA: Pay-as-you-throw schemes are ‘effective’

Pay-as-you-throw schemes have been “effective” in driving higher recycling rates in EU member states, the European Environmental Agency said on Monday

Pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) schemes have been “effective” in driving higher recycling rates in EU member states, the European Environmental Agency (EEA) said on Monday.

An EEA analysis of figures released by Eurostat in March found that all member states recycling 45% or more of their municipal waste in 2014 – including Germany, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden and Luxembourg – had a PAYT scheme in place.
