The EU should upgrade its waste reception facilities at ports and harmonise the fees they charge to make it easier for shipowners to recycle and contribute towards the circular economy, industry has said.

In a joint statement this week, industry associations ECSA (shipowners) and CLIA Europe (cruise lines) said that the EU Port Reception Facility Directive adopted in 2000 needs to be reviewed “urgently” to encourage waste separation and recycling at ports.
