The emission control area in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea has made the regions’ ferry industries greener than those in the Mediterranean, a study for the European Parliament has shown.

Other drivers for the better environmental credentials include Norwegian government’s environmental performance requirements for ferry route concessions and the exemption of Norwegian ferry businesses from paying a nitrogen oxide (NOx) tax if they implement NOx reducing measures, the study commissioned by the transport committee outlined.
