Portugal has asked the European Commission to act against a planned nuclear waste storage facility at Spain’s Almaraz nuclear plant near the Portuguese border.

On Tuesday, the country invoked Article 259 of the Lisbon treaty, which sets out the procedure for one member state to file a complaint against another for failure to fulfil a legal obligation
