Whether revised car CO2 emissions standards will reduce climate pollution depends on the way they are implemented, both environmental organisations and producers have said as the European Parliament adopted new rules.

The parliament rubber-stamped on Wednesday an agreement on post-2020 emission performance standards for cars and vans. The regulation, now subject only to formal endorsement by the EU Council, requires manufacturers to reduce average CO2 from their new cars by 15% in 2025 and 37.5% in 2030, compared to 2021 levels.
