France remains committed to 2022 coal phase-out

France’s environment minister François de Rugy set out on Wednesday a roadmap for phasing out coal power in the country by 2022

France’s environment minister François de Rugy set out on Wednesday a roadmap for phasing out coal power in the country by 2022, saying new measures would be required to curb electricity demand and ensure security of supply.

In a press conference this morning, Rugy confirmed that the French government was fully committed to meeting the 2022 phase-out date, dismissing reports that it was considering relaxing the target.

“Our determination and our willingness are extremely strong on the question of phasing coal for electricity in France,” he told reporters. “I know that certain people have planted the seed of doubt. For us there is no doubt at all.”
