Greece has urged the European Commission to postpone the entry into force of a regulation designed to prevent shipping firms from outsourcing the dismantling of old vessels to unsafe and environmentally damaging facilities outside the EU.

Under the 2013 Ship Recycling Regulation, from 31 December EU-registered vessels can only be dismantled in approved facilities. According to the European Commission, the aim is to “reduce the negative impacts linked to the recycling of ships flying the flag of member states of the Union”.
