EU ministers call for new post-2020 forest strategy

European agriculture ministers have handed the European Commission a mandate to develop a post-2020 EU forest strategy and to step up EU action against deforestation

European agriculture ministers have handed the European Commission a mandate to develop a post-2020 EU forest strategy and “present an ambitious communication on stepping up the EU action against deforestation”.

At the Agriculture Council on Monday, ministers agreed with the Commission that progress has been made towards ensuring that all EU forests “are managed according to sustainable forest management principles” and strengthening the EU's role in curbing deforestation worldwide, the objectives of the strategy adopted in 2013.
