Madrid city council approved on Friday a 30k/h speed limit on 85% of the road network and restrictions on vehicle access to the city centre in a package of new traffic regulations aimed at improving air quality and urban transport sustainability among other objectives.

Episodes of severe air pollution are frequent in the city and the European Commission last year issued a final warning to Spain about poor air quality in three zones including Madrid.
