The European Commission should channel funds from the future Horizon Europe scheme into fighting plastic pollution and funding decarbonisation projects, the EU executive heard on Monday as it hosted a conference on its recently updated Bioeconomy Strategy.

Tiago Pitta e Cunha, CEO of Oceano Azul Foundation, said the EC should commit to "a plastic-free-ocean mission" as part of the programme, which will replace the current Horizon 2020 programme in the next EU budget period.
