Bioeconomy ‘threat to climate and environment’

More than 120 civil society organisations from 40 countries around the world have called on governments to end their support for the bioeconomy

More than 120 civil society organisations from 40 countries around the world have called on governments to end their support for the bioeconomy, warning of the threats to the climate, biodiversity, and human rights.

European environmental groups including BUND, Biofuel Watch, Birdlife and Fern signed an open letter published on Wednesday to coincide with International Day of Action on Bioenergy.

The groups, which also include human rights organisations, said governments continued to promote burning forest biomass despite scientific studies showing it emits no less carbon than fuel while also threatening biodiversity.
