A growing coalition of plastics recyclers and campaign groups have redoubled a call for governments to agree legislation that would mandate a 35% recycled content for plastic bottles from 2025, after the EU executive acknowledged a market imbalance.

The call comes a day after the European Commission noted a mismatch between the annual 10m tonnes of recycled plastic that would be available by that date under voluntary pledges collected from industry under the EU Plastics Strategy, and expected demand of just 5m tonnes.
