EU governments would be set a voluntary 35% target for recycled content in new plastic bottles under new compromise text prepared by the Austrian presidency of the EU Council on the European Commission's proposal to limit the use of single-use plastic products.
The directive would call on “stakeholders to come forward with voluntary pledges to boost the uptake of recycled plastics”, reads the draft compromise. “Member states should take measures aiming at a recycled content of 35% in beverage bottles in line with food safety legislation”, it states.
